When I think of Happy Endings what really comes to mind are all the films I love. Surprise endings are great but I am a sucker for the 'I saw that one coming" Happy Ending. Even my favorite books are usually just that, due to an ending that leaves me comfortable knowing " ahhh, everything is okay now ". I wonder if this tells a lot about my personality? Maybe, it's because I am a worrier by nature? Maybe, because I am typically a pessimist, that I desire the optimistic outcome? Maybe, it's me hoping for an idealistic, romantic world? Several films that have ended tragically and unpredictably ('the departed 'comes to mind ) Leave me quite pissed off quite frankly! I was SO sure Leonardo DiCaprio would not only get the bad guys, but he'd get the girl, the career, the happy ending! Their ending really had me angry!
But take films (that i love) like 'return to me"... OH, HOW I love it when Minnie Driver and David Duchovny live happily ever after! She also lives happily ever after again in Good Will Hunting!
Or take "its a wonderful life"... it wouldn't be too wonderful If George Bailey would have killed himself and left Mary to raise all those kids alone!
Don't We all wish for happy endings to our own life story and the life stories of our loved ones?
The end of life's journey is inevitable, but How wonderful and happy that ending could be, If we've lived life to it's fullest, haven't battled any horrible illnesses, or injuries
and have given and received much love and happiness along the way.
That surely would be a lifetime movie I would truly enjoy watching ♥

I scored a 53, which is higher than I thought it would be because I tend to see the pessimistic side of things, and I, too, am a worrier, so I was quite surprised. It said, "Consider yourself a happy person." So I will. I haven't done SS yet, but I enjoyed yours.

I don't like sad endings either. But hangin endings are okay to me, as much as happy ones.

I guess your words all go to show the importance of the relationship between writer and reader. Each adds to the outcome - a relationship in every way.

well i got a 58,, so i guess what i interpret as contentment,, must be a clever disguise for happiness...
and you know what,, i love a twisted ending... i love trying to figure out whee something is going to end up,, but i am ever so impressed when the author takes it someplace i never saw coming!!
i scored a 62! yipeee! i'm so happy! LOL...i think life is what you make of it. you cannot depend on people or circumstances to make you happy, nor should you live "once i accomplish this or get this, then i'll be happy" attitude. happiness can be happening now if you let it...we all have today to make the best of it.
and, yes, i agree with you on The Departed! what happened?!!!! i was in shock at the end...EVERYBODY DIES! Jeez! i so wanted dicaprio to have had a happy ending, poor guy, he couldn't get a break....

As you've gathered from my post, I'm not a sucker for happy endings but they must exist, just like unhappiness must exist so that we recognize the opposite---happiness!
Well, what I admire is an inevitable ending, but I still keep wishing for a happy one. If I'm read until 2 or 3 am and know that MUST turn out the light and go to sleep even though I haven't finished the book, I sneak a look at the last page just to be sure that the ending will not be too unhappy.

I find I NEED happy endings in movies. On the rare occasion that I actually sit through an entire movie, it's escapism and leisure and I want it to repay me in kind - I'm not looking to be made miserable. Sadly my husband doesn't agree, which is why we almost never go to the movies, neither wants to see the other's choice! Jack Nicholson's The Pledge (my husband's insistence!) left me upset for months as I railed against the injustice of the ending. I was literally dreaming of the damn movie, unable to persuade my psyche that it was JUST A MOVIE!

I agree with Robin, I need happy endings - I watch movies to relax, how can you relax if the ending is sad or disturbing?? Nice post, particularly your last paragraph.
I love a good happy ending but being a movie buff I enjoy both. Dave gets angry like you. :)

great post, lucy --- i like happy endings if the story is not twisted and contrived along the way to make it so - but i much prefer true endings, especially if the story or film is a really great character study - i love to watch people!!!

Reading your post got me thinking about how I feel about happy endings in movies versus books. Oddly, I like happy endings in movies, but like my books to be more ambiguous.

I scored 49, but answered honestly.
I scored 66 and answered honestly too... I was worried about one question so I went back and answered that one again...it made it 67 ...nothing I didn't already know! It is a choice though, I could choose to wallow in negativity...but I don't!
I LOVE happy endings too and won't watch horrors or violence...not my thing...give me comedies and romance and I am a happy camper!
